  • RUGIPO Student Commits Suicide After Breakup

    RUGIPO

The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic community has been left in deep shock and mourning following the tragic death of a Mechanical Engineering student identified as Scott, who allegedly took his own life on Wednesday night after suffering emotional distress from a breakup.

According to reliable sources, Scott, popularly known among students as a vibrant and jovial personality, reportedly became severely depressed after his girlfriend ended their relationship. Friends close to him say he had been struggling to cope with the emotional toll, and despite subtle signs of distress, no one anticipated the extent of his despair.

Information obtained by POLY TV revealed that Scott purchased the rope he later used to hang himself and even took photos of it, which he sent to one of his friends. His final messages painted a heartbreaking picture of his mental state.

In one of his chats, he wrote:

“I’m not happy and you want me to eat, you are funny.”

“Just want to go and end everything right now.”

Shortly after sending the message, he was found lifeless, having reportedly hanged himself in his residence. The tragic news spread quickly across campus and on social media, leaving students and staff devastated.

Scott was widely known for his cheerful demeanor and was often described by classmates as “a lover boy” who had a light-hearted spirit and was easy to get along with.

The Student Union Government, faculty members, and fellow students have expressed their grief and extended condolences to his family. A candlelight procession is reportedly being planned by students in his honor.

As the school community continues to grapple with the loss, this incident has once again raised concerns about mental health awareness and emotional support systems in tertiary institutions. Students are urged to speak up, seek help, and check in on their friends regularly.

May Scott’s soul rest in peace. 🕊️

  • Real reason Tinubu can’t win 2027 election – El-Rufai

    Real reason Tinubu can’t win 2027 election – El-Rufai

Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State and a leading member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has stated that President Bola Tinubu is unlikely to succeed in his bid for re-election in 2027.

In an interview posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), El-Rufai dismissed the idea of a second term for the president, stating that only individuals out of touch with the country’s realities would think otherwise.

El-Rufai expressed that anyone who believes President Bola Tinubu can secure re-election is out of touch with the reality in Nigeria, as it is an impossibility.

The former influential member of the APC, who had earlier supported Tinubu’s presidential campaign in 2023, asserted that the ruling party has lost the trust of everyday Nigerians.

He believes that increasing dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies has created an opportunity for even the weakest opposition to succeed in elections.

“He added that he doesn’t see a pathway for him.”

El-Rufai minimized the significance of the surge in defections to the APC, suggesting that many new members are motivated by personal benefits or apprehension about anti-corruption investigations.

“It is the opportunistic and ambitious politicians, along with those seeking financial gain, contracts, appointments, or positions of power who are switching allegiances,” he stated. “Another group includes individuals defecting due to fear of potential pressure from the EFCC or ICPC because they might have engaged in questionable activities.”

He stressed that the SDP and its allied political coalition are concentrating not on politicians, but on engaging Nigerian voters who feel disappointed by the current leadership.

He stated, “This is the aim of the SDP and our political coalition. We anticipate that the 2027 elections will be a contest between the APC and Nigerians.”

El-Rufai is joining forces with a burgeoning coalition that features notable individuals like former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Their collective aim is to contest against President Tinubu in the upcoming general election, hoping to unseat him through democratic means.

  • U.S. Judge Temporarily Halts Deportation of Nigerian PhD Student Amid Trump Immigration Sweep

A federal court has issued a preliminary injunction preventing the U.S. government from deporting Nigerian chemistry scholar Matthew Ariwoola, whose student visa was abruptly revoked during President Donald Trump’s renewed immigration crackdown.

The legal battle began on April 8, 2025, when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) canceled Mr. Ariwoola’s visa, citing a mistaken criminal warrant issued in Georgia in 2023 — a state he had never visited.

The cancellation immediately suspended his academic duties at the University of South Carolina, where he is pursuing a PhD in chemistry.

Fearing deportation and the loss of his student status, Mr. Ariwoola contacted the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina (ACLU-SC), which filed a lawsuit on April 18.

That same day, Judge Jacquelyn Austin of the U.S. District Court in Columbia, South Carolina, granted a 14-day restraining order to stop the deportation.

The court also ordered Mr. Ariwoola’s student status restored, allowing him to resume research and teaching.

On April 24, DHS reactivated his visa status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, which monitors international students in the U.S.

Judge Austin later extended the restraining order three times, culminating in a preliminary injunction on June 13 to halt any removal efforts until a final ruling is made.

In her ruling, Judge Austin stated that “each factor weighs in favour of issuing a preliminary injunction,” confirming the case met the legal standards for immediate judicial intervention.

Mr. Ariwoola is among thousands of international students affected by Trump’s strict immigration policies since his return to office in January 2025.

The administration has aggressively pursued mass deportations, with student visa revocations becoming uincreasingly common.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Mr. Ariwoola expressed gratitude and called the development a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges.

“I am grateful for the quick turnaround and massive support from the community, especially ACLU-SC and the courts for ensuring that justice prevails,” Mr. Ariwoola said, according to a statement on the university’s website.

“I believe this will encourage other international students in the same situation to speak up and stand firm for what is right.”

A former Imo State governor, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim has disclosed that he once contemplated committing suicide in 2011 after being falsely accused of slapping a reverend father.

Ohakim made this known while interacting with some youths in Owerri, Imo State capital.

He recalled how the false accusation affected him sociologically to the extent of contemplating taking his life.

He said, “When I first heard the rumour, I dismissed same but when it started gaining traction in the media, including television stations, I became overwhelmed. At some point, I actually contemplated suicide,” he said.

The ex-governor revealed that he was not even in the state on the day of the alleged incident, saying he had verifiable evidence to prove same.

“I can show you an air ticket for that day, I wasn’t even in Imo State when the rumour broke out,” he said.

Ohakim further stressed that he was later vindicated when the cleric in question confessed to Rev. Ejike Mbaka that the allegation was fabricated and total falsehood meant to tarnish his image.

Reflecting on the public vindication, Ohakim stated, “When Father Mbaka mounted the pulpit, he said, if you accuse someone falsely and later find out the truth, you should apologise. He did, and I forgave everyone involved.”

Speaking on his 2011 governorship election, Ohakim said he won by a landslide but was removed through what he described as a “civilian coup.”

“In 2011, I won an election clean and clear, but there was a civilian coup,” he postulated.

The former governor stressed that he accepted the election result without bitterness and rancour.

According to Ohakim, “My administration was notable for its commitment to due process and the successful implementation of the Clean and Green programme, which had a broad scope covering health, education, and climate change.

“This initiative, had elevated Imo to a tourist paradise in Eastern Nigeria, boasting an enviable environment,” he said.

He charged the youths to acquire skills, stating that, “As I sit down here today, it am a welder, sheet maker, fabricator, a carpenter, and artist. You must acquire a skill that can fetch you something because any human being without a skill in the 21st century is like an animal in the bush.”

  • Since I bought a car, I started finding it very hard to date a man who does not have a car – Anthonia Umerah reveals

Since I bought a car, I started finding it very hard to date a man who does not have a car. In my head, I am usually imagining how the experience will be like. Will I be parking my car at home while we use taxi to go out on dates or will I carry my car, probably drop him at him place after the date before going home instead of the other way round and being the one driving a man🧐

Abi I will carry my car key give man?🤣😂

See ehh, is not like there’s anything wrong about a man not having a car at the moment but, it became weird for me to date one. There’s one I met few days ago, from my observation and our conversation, the guy is okay o. His only offense was just that, he does not own a car and I felt like it was affect my steeze🤣

This was previously not a problem for me at all when I didn’t have a car and I know there are woman who naturally don’t like dating men who do not own a car despite not having and it is still very VALID but my own issues about it started since I bought a car and I don’t know why.

I feel like; being the one to drive a man up and down is a masculine trait and i want to be feminine 😂😂

One thing that also scare me about this, is that, a lot of Nigerian mèn have insecurîty issues. Situation like this may bruisè the ego of an insècure man and he will start telling you “is it because you have a car in every little misunderstanding”.
