Samsung has issued a recall for over 1.1 million electric ranges after receiving numerous reports of “unintentional activation” due to front-mounted knobs, which resulted in fires and the deaths of some pets.
The recall involves certain slide-in electric range models with the potential for activation through accidental contact by people or pets, posing a significant fire hazard if flammable items are left on the stove. Samsung is offering free knob locks or covers as a remedy for models sold in the U.S. between 2013 and 2024.
Since 2013, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has documented over 300 incidents of unintentional activation, with the recalled ranges linked to approximately 250 fires. This includes at least 18 fires causing substantial property damage, around 40 injuries (eight requiring medical treatment), and reports of seven fires resulting in pet deaths.
The affected models, which include a range of slide-in electric range numbers, were sold at major retailers like Best Buy, Costco, and Lowe’s, as well as online. Samsung advises consumers to contact the company for free knob locks or covers and to avoid leaving objects on the range or in contact with the knobs.
