The Detroit Zoo has announced the birth of its first baby gorilla in its 96-year history. Born on Thursday, the infant’s sex has not yet been determined and it has yet to receive a name.
This significant event marks a milestone for the zoo, which now houses the newborn along with four other gorillas, including the mother, Bandia, and the father, Mshindi, who all arrived a year ago.
Staff at the zoo spent months preparing for the arrival, including using a stuffed gorilla to teach the existing troop how to handle a baby. They demonstrated how to gently touch and carry the toy, ensuring a smooth introduction.
The public will not have immediate access to view the new arrival. The gorillas’ area will remain closed until the animal care team confirms that Bandia and her baby have settled in and bonded.
