Google has withdrawn an Olympics ad for its chatbot Gemini following criticism over its portrayal of a young girl using AI to write a fan letter.
The ad, titled “Dear Sydney,” featured a father asking Gemini to help his daughter compose a letter to U.S. athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.
Despite initial positive testing, the ad faced backlash for promoting automation over authentic creativity, particularly with children. Google acknowledged the feedback and decided to phase out the ad from its Olympics rotation.
The company maintained that while AI can enhance creativity, it cannot replace it. This controversy follows similar issues faced by other tech companies, such as Apple, which also pulled a criticized ad.
