President Joe Biden stated that the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was detrimental to efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Haniyeh’s death, confirmed by both Hamas and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, occurred after he had participated in indirect ceasefire talks.
The killing has heightened fears of escalating violence in the Middle East, with threats of retaliation from Iran and anxiety among Gaza’s residents that the conflict might worsen.
Biden noted that while the U.S. was not involved in Haniyeh’s death, the incident complicates the ceasefire process.
Tensions between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah have further strained the region, with the conflict having already resulted in significant casualties and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
