The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has expanded its investigation into nearly 1 million Dodge SUVs produced by Stellantis due to issues with faulty door locks and windows, following a reported death linked to the problem.
Initially, the NHTSA’s inquiry, which began in May 2023, focused on 82,000 Dodge Journey SUVs from the 2009 model year. However, the probe has now been upgraded to an engineering analysis covering nearly 1 million vehicles from model years 2009 through 2020.
This decision was prompted by a fatal incident in Middleton, Wisconsin, in December 2022, where a person reportedly died after being trapped in a vehicle fire, potentially due to a malfunctioning door lock.
The investigation is examining 19 reported incidents of door and window malfunctions, including the fatality. Stellantis has expressed sympathy for the victim and is cooperating with the NHTSA. If the analysis confirms significant safety issues, it could lead to a recall.
