Following the tragic collapse of a two-storey building in Maryland, Lagos, which claimed the lives of five construction workers, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has introduced stringent new regulations. Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of LASBCA, announced an immediate ban on overnight stays at construction sites. This new rule, aimed at preventing future incidents, prohibits anyone, especially laborers, from staying on site after working hours and during the night.
To enforce compliance, LASBCA officials will conduct night inspections. The agency has also set construction hours from 7 am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday, excluding Sundays. Additionally, property owners and developers are required to employ only qualified professionalsโincluding structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, as well as architectsโfor their projects. Failure to comply with these requirements could lead to the sealing and possible removal of the construction site.
These measures are intended to improve safety standards in the building construction industry. LASBCA will also test materials from the collapsed structure to determine the cause of the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
