Habeeb Okikiola, the popular Nigerian music sensation known as Portable, has announced he will not participate in the planned nationwide protest over the current economic hardship in the country. Youths are organizing a protest from August 1 to 15 against the rising cost of living and economic difficulties.
In a viral video, Portable, who participated in protests in 2020, stated that he is now doing well and prefers to focus on achieving more success. He urged his fans to concentrate on their personal endeavors rather than engaging in protests.
Speaking in a mix of Pidgin and Yoruba, he said: “My fans, some said I protested in 2020. Yes, it’s true, but I was poor then. Now, I am rich. Have you ever seen Femi Otedola, Aliko Dangote, or Dele Momodu protesting?
“Back then, I thought like a poor man with nothing. Now I am rich. Rich people don’t fight.
“It won’t end well for anyone suggesting I should sing at a protest. Why don’t you take the microphone and sing yourself? If you’re hustling and have work, you won’t join the protest.
“Fight for yourself, not for Nigeria. Nigeria is okay; you are not. The money is there; you’re not working or loyal to your helper. Helpers are available; you’re not networking. Fight for yourself, so your career won’t become a barrier.”
