Sylvester Ofori, a Ghanaian pastor residing in the United States, has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2020 murder of his wife, Barbara Tommey. The sentencing followed a jury trial that began on Monday, July 22, where Ofori was found guilty of first-degree murder.
Witnesses and an affidavit from detectives revealed that Ofori was seen with a gun, following his wife as she walked towards a credit union. In a desperate attempt to get help, Barbara Tommey knocked on the credit union’s doors. Ofori shot her once, causing her to fall, then approached and shot her multiple times in the head before calmly driving away in his rented Dodge Journey. She was pronounced dead later that morning at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
Detectives confirmed that Tommey’s sister had recorded an argument between the estranged couple a day prior, where Ofori had threatened to kill her. In a Facebook video, Ofori told his brother-in-law, “If I don’t kill your sister, then I am fake.” The couple had been separated for about three months before the incident.
