The Lagos State Government has vowed to dem0lish more structures in the state after d@ngerous fl00ding was witnessed.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on Wednesday that numerous structures obstructing the free flow of rainwater will be removed, regardless of the status or position of their owners.
Wahab made this declaration following severe fl00ding that submerged numerous houses, communities, and properties in Lagos. The affected areas include Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, Awoyaya, and Ibeju-Lekki.
Tragically, a primary six pupil named Joshua was swÂŁpt away by floodwaters in the Ikosi, Ketu area of Lagos State.
Some area boys took advantage of the crisis, charging passers-by N100 to use a makeshift bridge at the Tradefair under-bridge in Lagos.
In response to a provocative post on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab addressed allegations that recent demlitions of properties owned by the Igbo community in Lagos were politically motivated. The post by @PureStanley1 suggested that the demolitions, justified by claims that the buildings bl0cked canals and caused fl00ding, were targeted against Igbo-owned properties.
@PureStanley1 wrote: “Can we all now agree that the Igbo-owned property and business dem0litions we witnessed in Lagos 2023 were all politically engineered? We were told that some buildings were built on canals, bl0cking water flow and causing fl00ding in Lagos. @tokunbo_wahab, can you explain why there was fl00ding in Lagos again yesterday and today, after demolishing Igbo-owned properties? Take the microphone, sir. We await your response!”
Wahab responded firmly, accusing the user of pushing an ethnic narrative. He reiterated that the removal of structures obstructing water flow would continue irrespective of the owners’ status.
“Many more structures obstructing the free flow of rainwater in Lagos will still be removed, irrespective of who or how highly placed the owners are. Prepare your mind to make your usual aimless and empty noise. If turning it into an ethnic narrative makes you happy, go ahead! TW,” he posted.
