1. In 1807, the last Sultan of the Sultanate of Kano, Muhammad Dan Yaji, known as Muhammad Alwali II, was assassinated at Burum-Burum in Kano.
The murder of Sultan Dan Yaji marked the end of the Kutumbawa line of Hausas in Kano, the fall of the Bagauda Dynasty created in 998 and the creation of the Kano Emirate.
2. In 1963, the Premier of Northern Region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, dethroned Muhammadu Sanusi I, the grandfather of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the reinstated Emir of Kano.
3. In 1981, Late Abubakar Rimi who was governor of Kano State from 1979 to 1983, restricted traditional homage paid by village heads to Emir Ado Bayero and excised some domains from his emirate.
4. In 1982, Gov. Abubakar Rimi returned the dethroned Sanusi I to Wudil, near Kano.
5. Still in 1982, Late Gov Abubakar Rimi created five emirates out of Kano Emirate.
6. In 1983, Gov Bakin-Zuwo, who took over from Rimi abrogated the 4 new Emirates and reverted to a single Kano Emirate.
7. On December 5, 2019, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, assented to the bill passed by the Kano State House of Assembly, seeking the decentralisation of the Kano Emirate. Aside from Kano, four new Emirates were created – Rano, Karaye, Bichi and Gaya.
Out of the 44 local councils in Kano State, Kano and Karaye Emirates had eight LG areas of jurisdiction each, Bichi and Gaya Emirates – 9 LGs each, Rano Emirate – 10 LGs.
8. On March 9, 2020, a letter signed by Alhaji Usman Alhaji, Secretary to Kano State Government, was addressed to Sanusi, informing him that he had been deposed from the throne of Emir of Kano by the Kano State Government.
9. On May 23, 2024, Kano State House of Assembly passed a Bill repealing the State Emirate Council Law 2019 that allowed former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to split Kano emirate to five.
10. On May 24, 2024, Gov Abba Yusuf signed the Bill and also reinstated the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
