This guide will help you kick-start your garden from store-bought tomatoes.
What you need:
– Ripe tomato
– Container with drainage holes
– Seed starting mix
– Spray bottle
– Cover
– Windowsill or a slightly shaded area
Steps:
1. Select a ripe tomato free from blemishes.
2. Cut the tomato in half and gently squeeze out the seeds.
3. Fill your planting container with moistened starting mix, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top.
4. Spread the seeds gently onto the soil surface and add a light layer of soil to it.
5. Use a spray bottle to gently mist the soil surface until moist but not soggy. To create a mini greenhouse effect and promote germination, you can cover the container loosely with a clear material.
6. Place your container on a windowsill or in a mildly shaded area.
7. Be patient! Germination can take anywhere from 5-14 days. Keep the soil consistently moist by misting when needed. Once you see tiny green sprouts emerge, remove the covering material.
