Daniel Bwala, former spokesperson for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation, has alleged that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 Presidential Election, is considering leaving the Labour Party to join Nasir El-Rufai, a former Kaduna Governor, in the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Bwala made these claims in a post on his social media handle on Friday, citing the current crisis within the Labour Party, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) threatening to assert control over the party.
Peter Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, joined the Labour Party in May 2023 ahead of the 2023 general elections after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bwala, a member of the PDP who has declared support for President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggested that Obi’s alleged plan to unite with El-Rufai in the SDP could be linked to the turmoil within the Labour Party.
El-Rufai was recently seen at the national secretariat of the Social Democratic Party in Abuja, where he paid a consultation visit to the national chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam. Despite caution from those present against sharing photos of the visit on social media, El-Rufai reportedly stated, ‘I don’t care.’
It’s worth noting that El-Rufai’s nomination as a minister was not confirmed by the Nigerian Senate last August, alongside two other nominees, due to security concerns that needed to be addressed.
