Management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) and leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the institution have reacted to the recent marriage proposal by a lecturer in the Department of Sociology in the institution, Mr Wisdom Anucha, to a student of Optometry in a classroom.
Recall that Anucha stunned many students on Valentine’s Day when he proposed to his fiancée in her classroom.
In viral pictures and videos on social media, Anucha could be seen kneeling with a ring in his hand while proposing to his heartthrob.
Sequel to the proposal, many netizens criticized the proposal having taken place in a classroom and thereafter called on relevant authorities to sanction him.
When contacted, spokesperson for the university, Chijioke Nwogu, said what happened was a personal matter.
“I think this is a personal matter. I am not in a position to speak about the lecturer’s relationship,” he said.
Similarly, the chairperson of ASUU in ABSU, Chidi Mbah, said the matter had been discussed at the union’s meeting where they ascertained that there is no law against the lecturer’s action.
He said: “The proposal to the student is not against our principle. It is a matter of choice.
“On the part of the university law, to the best of my knowledge, there is no law that is against that.
“When the lecturer did the proposal, there was no academic activity going on in the classroom. So, he didn’t violate any known law.”
