Senegal has reinstated mobile internet service access following a two-day shutdown. The suspension occurred shortly after President Macky Sall’s decision to postpone elections sparked protests in Dakar.
Lawmakers subsequently voted to hold the election in December, extending Sall’s tenure.
The country’s ministry cited the dissemination of hateful and subversive messages on social media as grounds for the shutdown, though it faced criticism from foreign nations and human rights activists.
The US condemned the delay and urged the Senegalese government to restore full internet access immediately, emphasizing the importance of respecting democratic traditions and freedoms of assembly and expression.
Internet monitoring company Netblocks reported the restoration of internet service on Wednesday, although the sustainability of this restoration remains uncertain.
Citizens in Senegal also confirmed the reinstatement of internet access.
