The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has announced that the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Modibo Adama University in Adamawa, and Ambrose Alli University in Edo are among several institutions running engineering courses with expired accreditation.
COREN is the statutory body responsible for the regulation, control, and training of engineers in Nigeria.
The accreditation of engineering courses is important to ensure that graduates have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice engineering safely and ethically.
In a statement released on September 16, 2023, COREN President Sadiq Abubakar said that the universities listed in the announcement have been running engineering courses with expired accreditation for several months or even years. He urged the affected universities to take immediate steps to renew their accreditation or stop running the courses altogether.
Abubakar also warned the public against enrolling in engineering courses at institutions that are not accredited by COREN. He said that graduates of unaccredited engineering programs will not be able to register with COREN and practice engineering legally in Nigeria.
