Residents of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, were thrown into panic on Thursday when a clash erupted between NDLEA operatives and police officers at the Ekeki Police Division during an attempt to arrest a suspected drug dealer.
The NDLEA team, who had reportedly documented their operation in the police register, faced obstruction from policemen allegedly protecting the suspect, said to be the wife of a police officer. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots during the altercation, causing chaos as residents scrambled for safety, and NDLEA vehicles were seen with deflated tyres after being shot at.
NDLEA spokesman Mr. Howells Obah confirmed their adherence to standard procedures and expressed concern over the incident, while Bayelsa Police PRO Musa Mohammed stated he was investigating the matter. The incident highlights tensions between the two security agencies and raises questions about the suspect’s alleged protection.
