Suspected bandits launched an attack on the General Hospital in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, injuring a doctor and kidnapping five hospital staff members.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed the incident, noting that the injured victims are receiving treatment and that efforts are underway to rescue the abductees and apprehend the attackers.
According to Aliyu, the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed the hospital on January 14, 2025, at approximately 8:20 PM, firing sporadically. In response, officers from the Kankara Divisional Police Headquarters engaged the bandits in a gunfight, thwarting part of the attack.
During the incident, Dr. Murtala Saleh, 30, sustained a gunshot wound to the right thigh, and 20-year-old Kamala Suleiman was shot in the knee. Both are reported to be in stable condition.
Three individuals were abducted during the attack. The State Police Commissioner, Aliyu Abubakar Musa, condemned the assault on healthcare facilities and directed additional security measures, including deploying operational reinforcements and intensifying the hunt for the perpetrators.
