Mali’s Govt led by Colonel Assimi Göita have signed a memorandum of understanding on November 21, 2022 with China for the installation of two Cotton spinning units, one in the town of Koutiala and the other in Bamako the country’s capital.The President of the Transition, HE Colonel Assimi GOĂŹTA, Head of State, AFRICAN REPORT FILES learnt three days after the signing of the protocol receives, this Friday, November 25, 2022, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Chen ZHIHONG, who accompanied a delegation of his country as part of the implementation of this project.
The first unit will be installed in Koutiala with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes of cotton fiber to be transformed into net. The second unit will be installed in Bamako with a capacity of 25,000 tons per year. This makes about 45,000 tons of cotton fiber.
The installation of the two factories will make it possible to create:
-5000 direct jobs
-50,000 indirect jobs
They will enable the processing of 30% of Malian production.
Mali is ranked, Africa’s largest cotton producer produced 760,000 tonnes of cotton in the 2021/2022 cotton season.
It increased from 630,000 tons produced in 2020/2021.
Cotton is Mali’s second biggest export commodity while Benin Republic is Africa’s second largest producer of cotton with 714,000 tons in 2021/2022.
