The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State Council, has commended Governor Pastor Umo Eno for the ongoing physical verification exercise of civil servants, which has uncovered over 2,000 ghost workers in the state’s payroll system.
The NLC Secretary in Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Alpha Marshall, disclosed this during a telephone interview on XL106.9FM’s Super Breakfast Show, “The Talk,” on Tuesday.
According to Comrade Marshall, a total of 51,700 civil servants have been successfully verified so far, compared to the 55,120 workers previously recorded before the exercise.
Marshall described the verification exercise as seamless and transparent. He confirmed that the report is ready for submission to Governor Eno for further action.
Addressing the issue of unverified workers, he revealed that plans are underway to reschedule verification for individuals facing discrepancies related to their National Identification Number (NIN). He assured that this rescheduling will not delay the submission of the current report to the governor.
Governor’s Commitment to Workers’ Welfare
Comrade Marshall praised Governor Eno for his dedication to the welfare of civil servants, describing him as a “promise keeper.” He expressed confidence that the new minimum wage of ₦80,000, which the governor pledged to implement after the verification exercise, would soon be paid.
It will be recalled that Governor Eno, as part of his commitment to improving civil servants’ welfare, announced plans to implement the ₦80,000 minimum wage effective November last year, contingent upon the completion of the verification exercise.
