The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, is at the center of a growing controversy over alleged irregularities in the appointment of key officials, sparking outrage among staff and residents of Ondo State.

At the heart of the matter is the contentious process leading to the appointment of a new vice-chancellor and registrar, with accusations of non-compliance with institutional regulations and disregard for court injunctions.
The recently appointed registrar, Mr. Adeniran Imoleayo, faces allegations of bias in the shortlisting process, which reportedly excluded several qualified candidates. Critics argued that the procedures for appointing the vice-chancellor have also flouted legal directives.
Attention has turned to the Chairman of UNIMED’s Governing Council, Professor Ayo Arowojolu, who has been accused of failing to constitute a selection committee as required by the university’s laws. This has led to questions about the roles played by other key figures, including the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Rose-Angela Nwuba.
“Why are Professor Arowojolu, Professor Fatusi, and Professor Nwuba disobeying a court of competent jurisdiction?” asked a concerned stakeholder. “Are they trying to incite unrest in Ondo State?”
The controversy extends beyond succession issues. The university’s leadership has been accused of financial misappropriation and unlawful imposition of Registrar and Vice-Chancellors’ designates, prompting a civil society group to file a lawsuit against the trend at the Ondo State High Court, Akure Division (Suit No: AK/399/2024).
Further allegations emerged after the university’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Owoeye Segun Emmanuel, was accused of threatening violence against a court bailiff attempting to serve legal notices.
The removal from office of Professor Loto, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Clinical Services, has further fueled tensions. Insiders claim his removal was linked to his opposition to alleged financial irregularities involving top officials in the University of Medical Science, Ondo City.
“Professor Loto’s uncompromising stance against financial recklessness made him a target,” said a source familiar with the situation.
Amid the escalating crisis, residents of Ondo State have called on Governor Orimisan Ayedatiwa to intervene and restore order at UNIMED.
“This level of disorder is unacceptable in an institution of learning,” said one critic. “Even motor parks operate with more decorum. The governor must act swiftly to save UNIMED from further disrepute.”
The university’s management has yet to comment on the allegations, but the controversy has placed the institution under intense public scrutiny, with many demanding transparency and accountability.
