Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, detained in Iran for allegedly violating Islamic law, has been released after three weeks in custody. Sala, who entered Iran on December 13, 2024, was arrested six days later, sparking condemnation from Italy as “unacceptable.”
Her release followed intensive diplomatic and intelligence efforts, announced by Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, who personally informed Sala’s parents. Iranian media confirmed the release but offered no explanation, while Sala departed Tehran for Italy.
Her return was celebrated in Italy, with Meloni thanking those involved in securing her freedom.
