A number of people are feared to have died in Okija, Anambra State following a stampede that occurred during a rice sharing event.
The tragedy on Saturday morning came after Obi Jackson Foundation, run by oil magnate Ernest Obiejesi, announced plans to share rice to the less privileged in the spirit of 2024 Christmas.
Reports say the incident occurred on Saturday morning, with the victims being mostly women.
Trending social media videos show lifeless bodies laying on the ground after the incident.
Some victims have reportedly been taken to nearby hospitals.
Charles Aburime, the chief press secretary to the Anambra governor, Charles Soludo, who confirmed the incident, said the state government is monitoring the situation and would soon release a statement.
This is coming a few days after over 35 people, mostly children, died during a stampede at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
