Tolulope Abraham Adesina (Tolu): A Brief Profile
Tolulope Abraham Adesina (popularly known as Tolu) is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, music producer, recording artist, and actor. Born in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria, Tolu rose to fame as a finalist in the 2010 MTN Project Fame Season 3, where he emerged as one of the six winners.
Early Life
Tolu was born into a Baptist family in Barnawa, Kaduna, where he grew up immersed in church activities. He joined the church choir at the age of 11, which served as the foundation for his musical development. His unique soprano vocals set him apart even as a young singer. Tolu drew inspiration from music legends such as Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston, R. Kelly, and Brandy.
Education and Early Music Career
Tolu pursued a degree in Architecture at Kaduna Polytechnic. His journey into professional music began when he auditioned for West African Idols in 2008. In 2009, he competed in BET’s Sunday Best, hosted by Kirk Franklin, becoming the only Nigerian finalist that year.
His breakthrough came in 2010 when he participated in the MTN Project Fame West Africa competition. His debut single, Arewa, released that year, became a hit, receiving widespread airplay across Nigeria.
Career in Music and Acting
After Project Fame, Tolu moved to Lagos, where he collaborated with Don Jazzy, CEO of Mavin Records, to produce the track My Lover. He also recorded another single, Ife Mi, with music producer Baby Fresh, and collaborated with Tiwa Savage in 2015 to create a rendition of Silent Night.
