Five individuals are missing after a fishing boat capsized near Couverden Point, Alaska, early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 50-foot vessel issued a mayday call at 12:10 a.m., which was overheard by the AMHS Hubbard ferry. The ferry arrived on the scene first and provided assistance, but although evidence of the capsized boat was found, there has been no sign of the five individuals who were aboard.
The Coast Guard continues its search with help from Good Samaritans operating the ferry.
The search is being conducted in extremely challenging conditions, including heavy snow and winds up to 60 mph, with sea swells reaching 6 feet. An emergency position-indicating radio beacon alert was also received, originating just south of Point Couverden in Icy Strait. The Coast Guard has deployed both water- and air-based teams, including a helicopter search crew.
While the number of people aboard the boat is still unconfirmed, officials are continuing their efforts in hopes of locating the missing individuals, but there is no indication of when the search might end.
