Former Nigerian Head of State Yakubu Gowon explains why he divided Nigeria into 12 states during his regime.
Former Nigerian Head of State and distinguished elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), has articulated the motivations behind his advocacy for the establishment of 12 states in Nigeria during his tenure.
He indicated that this initiative was designed to alleviate tensions and mitigate concerns regarding potential northern dominance over other regions within the federation.
Gowon made these remarks during a courtesy visit from a delegation led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau of the League of Northern Democrats at the Yakubu Gowon Centre in Abuja.
He further encouraged Northern leaders to forge a consensus on matters that would advance the collective interests of Nigeria.
Gowon emphasized his belief that the responsibility for upholding Nigeria’s true democracy lies predominantly with the North, citing Baba Tafawa Balewa as a representation of this principle.
He expressed hope that the visit would not revert to a mindset where regional interests overshadow national unity, asserting that actions taken by the North should ultimately benefit the entire nation.
He reiterated that his support for the creation of additional states was a strategic measure to prevent any single region from gaining excessive power and jeopardizing the unity of the country.
