Instagram’s Threads has seen a surge of nearly 35 million new users this month, driven by Meta’s efforts to attract users leaving X and maintain an edge over emerging platform Bluesky.
The platform’s growth has accelerated in mid-November, with 20 million new sign-ups in the past 10 days alone, according to Meta spokesperson Andy Stone.
This surge follows a period from Nov. 1 to 14, during which 15 million users joined. The spike in users is partly attributed to dissatisfaction with X, as many users, including prominent left-wing figures, have left or deactivated their accounts due to concerns about a “toxic” or “disturbing” environment under Elon Musk’s leadership.
While it’s unclear how many of Threads’ new users are former X members, the increase reflects a broader trend of social media users migrating across platforms.
Bluesky, another competitor to X, has also seen a significant rise in users, with its user base growing by over 500 percent since the recent election, reaching over 22.5 million users.
However, Threads still leads with approximately 275 million active users, while X has about 588 million accounts.
To maintain its position, Threads has rolled out new features, including a custom feed that lets users personalize their content and improvements to its search and trending features.
These updates come as Threads looks to strengthen its foothold in the competitive social media landscape.
