Terror struck Benue State as gunmen launched a brutal two-day assault on several communities, leaving at least 30 residents dead and many others injured.
The attacks occurred in the Apa and Agatu local government areas, where armed assailants reportedly stormed the villages, shooting indiscriminately and setting properties ablaze. Survivors recounted harrowing scenes of chaos as families fled for safety while others were caught in the deadly crossfire.
Local authorities confirmed the tragedy, describing it as one of the worst in recent times. Security forces have since been deployed to the affected areas to restore order and prevent further violence.
Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings, calling for swift action to apprehend the perpetrators. “This senseless loss of life is unacceptable. We will do everything possible to ensure justice for the victims and their families,” the governor vowed.
The incident has reignited calls for increased security presence in Benue, a state that has long grappled with violent clashes attributed to herdsmen-farmer conflicts and criminal gangs. Community leaders are urging the federal government to intervene and provide lasting solutions to the recurring violence.
As residents mourn their losses, fears of further attacks have heightened, with many displaced families seeking refuge in neighboring areas. The tragedy underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
