Showunmi calls for a robust political movement to end APC’s dominance ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
Otunba Segun Showunmi, the former Spokesperson for the now-defunct Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, has emphasized the urgent necessity for a political movement aimed at displacing the current All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
He remarked on the evolution of the opposition in Nigeria’s democracy since 1999, highlighting the strides made towards multi-party democracy, including the notable power transition in 2015.
However, he expressed concern over the diminishing enthusiasm among citizens, as each election appears to yield poorer turnout and engagement, leading to a troubling cycle of regression.
During a press conference in Abuja, he lamented the erosion of ideological distinctions within political parties, which has shifted the focus from values to individual personalities, and warned of a troubling trend where monetary influence overshadows the electoral process.
Despite improvements in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s guidelines, he noted a concerning decline in electoral integrity and transparency.
Furthermore, he criticized the judiciary for its diminishing credibility, which is essential for maintaining checks on government institutions.
He called for the emergence of a movement to safeguard the nation and its democracy from the looming threats.
