Alex Onyia, in a recent post, highlighted the declining practical skills of Nigerian graduates, labeling many as “illiterate graduates.” Onyia recounted an incident involving final-year Mechanical Engineering students from Imo State University (IMSU) during their graduation party.
According to Onyia, the generator powering the event developed a fault, but none of the engineering students could fix it. “They had to search for an artisan who eventually repaired the generator,” Onyia stated.
The post raises concerns about the quality of education and the employability of graduates from many state and federal universities. Onyia criticized the lack of hands-on skills among these graduates, emphasizing the disconnect between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
This incident has sparked discussions on social media about the state of Nigeria’s educational system, particularly in engineering and technical fields. Many commenters echoed Onyia’s concerns, calling for reforms to prioritize practical training in universities.
