The Nigerian Police have launched a manhunt for unknown gunmen who ambushed and killed four vigilante operatives in Anambra State. The incident occurred in the Oba community of Idemili South Local Government Area during a sit-at-home exercise reportedly enforced by the gunmen.
According to Sahara Reporters, the attack took place while the vigilantes were on patrol. The gunmen intercepted and opened fire on them, leaving four operatives dead. Eyewitnesses claim the gunmen fled the scene before reinforcements arrived.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. A spokesperson said:
“We have commenced investigations and are working tirelessly to apprehend those behind this heinous act. Residents are advised to remain calm as we intensify efforts to restore normalcy.”
This attack underscores the challenges posed by the sit-at-home order frequently enforced by separatist groups in the southeast. Communities have suffered violence, economic disruption, and loss of lives due to such enforcements.
Authorities have urged citizens to report suspicious activities and provide information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
