Tragedy struck in Kano State as a 60-year-old driver, Sabi’u Yusha’u Unguwa Uku, lost his life after accidentally falling into an abandoned well at CBN Quarters, Hadejia Road. The incident occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024, when Sabi’u, who served as a driver to the Minister of Defence’s first wife, came to drop off guests.
According to the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the victim had stepped out to urinate but unknowingly stepped onto a weak well cover, causing it to collapse under him.
Emergency services received a distress call at around 10:35 PM, and responders arrived at the scene 15 minutes later. The victim was pulled out unconscious and rushed to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
His remains were handed over to authorities at Dakata Police Division, while the Fire Service emphasized the dangers posed by abandoned wells in residential areas.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the need to secure open wells and debris-filled areas to prevent similar accidents.
