Federal authorities have announced a $25,000 reward for information on a series of arson attacks targeting ballot boxes in Washington state and Oregon last month.
The FBI is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in three fires set on ballot boxes during early voting in October. These incidents occurred on October 8 in Vancouver, Washington, and later on October 28 in both Vancouver and Portland, Oregon. In the first Vancouver incident, a fire suppression device malfunctioned, resulting in damage to hundreds of ballots. In each case, the FBI reported the use of an improvised incendiary device placed on the ballot boxes. Surveillance footage captured a vehicle connected to the Portland incident, offering key details about the suspect’s actions and vehicle.
The vehicle, a dark-colored 2003 to 2004 Volvo S-60 sedan with dark wheels and a light interior, was observed in a video that shows a driver lighting an item and throwing it into the ballot box.
The vehicle displayed a fraudulent temporary Washington license plate on the rear, and no front license plate, at the time of the October 28 incidents. The suspect, described as a white male between 30 to 40 years old with thinning hair, is believed to have experience in metalwork and welding.
Sources revealed that the devices used in these attacks were marked with “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine,” though it’s unclear if these slogans reflect the suspect’s views or an attempt to stoke political tensions.
