Medical King is recalling approximately 222,000 adult portable bed rails after one reported fatality. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning about the bed rails, which pose a serious entrapment hazard. When attached to a bed, users can become trapped within the bed rail or between the rail and the mattress, presenting a significant risk of asphyxiation.
The recalled bed rails include the Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights (model numbers 7007 and 7057) and the Bed Assist Rail Without Legs (model number 7037).
The recall follows a November 2023 incident at a South Carolina care facility where a 66-year-old man died after being entrapped between the mattress and the rail. Medical King sold the recalled products online from January 2020 to March 2024 for about $40.
The company is offering free repair kits or replacement bed rails for affected consumers. The CPSC urges individuals to report any related incidents to SaferProducts.gov.
