Edo Govt suspends all revenue collection in motorparks and calls for violators to be arrested. Find out what this means for transport operators and officials.”
The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has announced an indefinite halt to revenue collection in motor parks and other areas throughout the state, effective immediately.
He has instructed the State Commissioner of Police to apprehend anyone who violates this directive. Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, communicated this decision in a statement released to the media in Benin City on Wednesday.
Itua indicated that the governor plans to assess the situation regarding revenue collections shortly and will determine the next steps.
He emphasized that any individual attempting to collect revenue on behalf of the state government will face arrest, reiterating that no one is permitted to engage in such activities until further notice.
Reports indicate that members of various commercial transport unions began collecting fees from commercial vehicles at bus stops along Ekenwa Road and the New Benin Market area early in the morning, demanding N1000 from each vehicle.
Union members, identifiable by their branded T-shirts from organizations such as the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and Drivers on Wheel, have been actively enforcing these charges.
This situation has led to an increase in transport fares, with drivers raising prices from N300 to N500.
