-The Nigerian government has formalised the activities of 250 small and artisanal miners into cooperatives as part of its strategy to combat illegal mining and transition miners to legal operations.
-As of October 2024, Nigeria has established 150 buying centres, supporting the formalisation process and improving the trading environment for artisanal miners.
-Nigeria is rich in over 44 types of minerals, and the government aims to shift the mining sector from raw extraction to value addition and local beneficiation, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and industrial development.
-Several key mining projects are underway, including lithium and rare earth processing plants in Kwara and Kebbi, a tantalite processing plant in the FCT, and a new gold refinery in Gwarinpa, which will enhance Nigeria’s mining capabilities.
-The 9th edition of Nigeria Mining Week, taking place from November 18-20, 2024, will focus on strengthening the mining sector as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy, with discussions on environmental reforms, financing innovations, and global positioning of Nigerian minerals.
