Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has stated that the state’s police will not cooperate with federal agencies in deporting migrants if President-elect Donald Trump proceeds with his mass deportation plans.
In an interview on MSNBC, Healey, a Democrat, firmly responded “No, absolutely not” when asked if Massachusetts would assist with deportations. She emphasized the importance of standing firm against such actions, stating that state officials will face significant pressure but will use all available tools to protect residents, uphold democracy, and maintain the rule of law.
Trump has indicated that his mass deportation efforts, which could target over 11 million undocumented migrants, would be initiated on his first day in office.
He has proposed using the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, deploying troops to the U.S. border, and enlisting local police in deportation efforts.
While Healey criticized Trump’s stance on immigration and expected strong legal challenges to his plans, Trump has argued that deportations are necessary to protect communities from criminal migrants and preserve national security.
He further claimed that mass deportations are “common sense” and vowed to implement them regardless of the cost.
