Bayelsa State has been without electricity for three months, Governor Douye Diri reveals, highlighting the ongoing power crisis in the region.
Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State has reported that the state has been experiencing a power outage for over three months, a situation he attributes to the vandalism of the national grid by criminals.
This statement was made during his address at the 20th All Nigeria Editors’ Conference (ANEC) taking place in Yenagoa, the state capital.
He clarified that the electricity observed in hotels and other locations within the capital is generated from alternative sources, not the National Grid.
Diri indicated that his administration plans to utilize the recently signed Electricity Bill by President Bola Tinubu to create an independent power supply for the state, capitalizing on its abundant gas resources.
He acknowledged the media’s contribution to strengthening democracy in Nigeria and took the opportunity to discuss his administration’s accomplishments and the environmental issues facing the state, encouraging the media to highlight these matters in their coverage.
The Governor expressed pride in hosting the NGE conference and wished the participants productive discussions and a pleasant stay.
It is noteworthy that the Electricity Bill, signed by President Tinubu in June 2023, empowers states, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, replacing the previous Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) established in 2005.
This new legislation aims to unify existing laws governing the electricity supply sector, providing a comprehensive framework to support the post-privatization phase of Nigeria’s Electricity Supply Industry and promote private sector investment.
