Democrats are reeling after Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to Donald Trump in Tuesday’s presidential election, with various figures pointing fingers over what went wrong. Democratic strategist Joshua Doss and political commentator Cenk Uygur appeared on NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo show to discuss the reasons for the defeat. Doss defended Harris, stating she ran a solid campaign focused on working-class policies, while Uygur criticized her as a poor candidate more focused on appeasing donors. Cuomo suggested that the Democratic Party needs to shift its focus from “who is woke” to “who is broke” in future campaigns.
Though much of the blame was not directed at Harris, some Democrats questioned her choice of running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, with one operative describing him as offering “next to nothing” to the ticket.
There was also disappointment over Harris’ economic message and concerns about the campaign’s polling, which failed to recognize Trump’s growing appeal among Latino voters. Some of Harris’ supporters expressed frustration with President Biden’s decision to wait until summer to announce his reelection bid, with figures like Andrew Yang suggesting that had Biden stepped down earlier, the outcome could have been different.
