A Qantas passenger plane departing from Sydney faced an emergency on Friday after experiencing engine failure, forcing the aircraft to circle before successfully making an emergency landing. The engine failure coincided with a grass fire along the runway, though it remains unclear if the two incidents were connected, Sydney Airport officials stated.
The fire has since been contained, but delays to other flights are anticipated.
The Boeing 737-800, which was en route to Brisbane, suffered a loud bang before the engine failure, but no injuries have been reported. Qantas did not specify the number of passengers on board.
Qantas Chief Pilot Captain Richard Tobiano expressed empathy for those affected, stating, “We understand this would have been a distressing experience for customers, and we will be reaching out to them this afternoon to offer support.” He also confirmed that an investigation into the engine failure would take place.
