The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly ordering the release of 76 young individuals previously detained and charged with terrorism, treason, and arson for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protest.
In a statement issued by Minority Leader Rep. O.K Chinda, Minority Whip Rt. Hon. Dr. Ali Isa J.C, Deputy Minority Leader Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki, and Deputy Minority Whip Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi, the Caucus expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s responsiveness to appeals from Nigerians and the international community.
“We commend President Tinubu for his prompt directive, just days after the arraignment, which led to the Attorney-General of the Federation moving to assume control and dismiss the case entirely,” the Caucus stated.
The Caucus further urged a thorough investigation and potential prosecution of those responsible for the detention, condemning the “inhuman treatment” of the children, which brought national embarrassment and global criticism.
“Anyone involved in the wrongful detention of these children—keeping them in cells for about 95 days when they should have been attending school, learning trades, or working—must be held accountable,” the statement added.
Acknowledging the psychological and health impacts the children may have suffered, the Caucus called for reformatory therapy and medical support to help them reintegrate with their families. Additionally, they advocated for reparations to the children and their families to mitigate the hardship and emotional toll they endured during their unlawful detention.
