National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have urged the Federal Government to implement the promised N77,000 monthly allowance to ease the economic hardship they are facing.
In posts across social media platforms on Wednesday, corps members expressed frustration over the continued payment of the old N33,000 allowance, despite the governmentโs approval of a new minimum wage in July 2024.
They highlighted the rising costs of transportation, food, and other daily expenses as making the current allowance unsustainable.
On X (formerly Twitter), @NoorAjuwon posted, โThree months later, the Federal Government still thinks N33k is enough for NYSC members to survive.โ
Another user, @Arbdoolbasid_Jr., questioned, โHow are we supposed to focus on our assignments with just N33k given the current economic climate?โ
@Eze_na_ujari shared that after spending N5,000 on transport and N2,000 on Community Development Service (CDS) contributions, heโs left with just N26,000 from the N33,000 allowance.
Other users, like @blazzin_225, described the conditions as โsuffering and wickednessโ due to substandard NYSC lodgings, poor bathroom facilities, and inadequate food.
A plea was also directed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (@officialABAT), urging, โSee us as your children too. Weโre dying.โ
Peoplesmind reports that the Federal Government approved the new minimum wage in April 2024, and it is expected that the revised amount will also be extended to corps members soon.
