Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Idris Gobir, has raised alarms over the rise of a new terrorist group, named LAKURAWAS, operating within the state.
Gobir disclosed this development while receiving members of Course 33 from the National Defence College, Abuja, during their study tour to Sokoto. He described the group as a faith-based extremist organization, noting that intelligence reports suggest they are armed with sophisticated weaponry and have been involved in criminal activities across five local government areas in the state.Β
This new threat comes as Sokoto continues to grapple with ongoing banditry. Gobir emphasized that security agencies are intensifying efforts to combat the growing menace. “The state government is closely collaborating with federal security agencies to address the various security challenges facing the people of Sokoto,” he stated.
Gobir also highlighted the state’s proactive measures to tackle insecurity and expressed hope that the study tour would provide crucial insights into the evolving criminal activities, leading to strategies for ensuring public safety and fostering peaceful coexistence.Β
In his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, noted that the National Defence College, established in 1992, is the countryβs highest military institution. It is dedicated to training officers from the military, police, and other strategic agencies for higher responsibilities. Since its inception, the college has graduated nearly 3,000 participants, including many from 30 African and Asian countries. At the conclusion of the tour, the team will present their findings and recommendations in both oral and written reports.
