A Russian engineer employed at a major tank manufacturer has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for treason after being convicted of passing military secrets to Ukraine, a court announced on Tuesday.
The Sverdlovsk regional court confirmed that Daniel Mukhametov, 32, was working at Uralvagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil, one of the worldโs largest tank manufacturers, when he and his wife, Viktoria, were arrested by Russiaโs FSB security services in 2023.
Both Mukhametov and his wife, who also worked at the company, were accused of providing Ukrainian intelligence with sensitive military and technical information.
Mukhametov “partially admitted his guilt” during the trial and was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his actions.
In early October, Viktoria Mukhametova was sentenced to 12.5 years for the same charges, according to Russian news outlets.
This case marks the latest in a series of espionage trials linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, following Russiaโs invasion of the country in February 2022. Since the war began, Russia has detained or fined thousands of individuals for opposing the invasion or suspected of espionage.
