A Kano lawmaker ditches Kwankwaso’s faction, showing allegiance to the governor. Learn about the potential effects on NNPP’s influence in Kano.
Kabiru Rurum, who represents the Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has openly withdrawn his support from Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s faction within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Instead, he is backing the group led by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, one of the party’s founders.
On Sunday, Rurum, a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, declared his support for Dr. Aniebonam’s NNPP faction—represented by a fruit logo—as the legitimate group. He rejected Kwankwaso’s faction that is symbolized by a book logo as legitimate.
He also urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to exercise independence and refrain from taking orders from Kwankwaso.
“My loyalty is steadfast with Governor Yusuf,” Rurum declared, reassuring the people of Kano and his constituents that the governor possesses the ability to make sound decisions for the state.
When asked about the chances of switching allegiance, Rurum asserted his dedication to being a member of the NNPP under Aniebonam’s leadership and criticized Kwankwaso for purportedly taking over the party for personal gain.
“Dr. Boniface offered Kwankwaso a platform, and it is unjust to strip him of the party and treat him unfairly,” he commented.
After this announcement, another representative from Dala Federal Constituency also departed from the Kwankwasiyya movement. He urged his supporters to abandon the red cap, which represents Kwankwasiyya’s ideology.
This development comes after a recent decision by the High Court’s Uzuakoli Division in Abia State, under the leadership of Justice C.U. Okoroafor.
On November 1, 2024, the court mandated that control of the NNPP be transferred to its Board of Trustees. This body is led by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, who founded the party. The decision was a result of legal action taken by three members from Abia in response to an ongoing leadership crisis within the NNPP.
