The National Association of University Students (NAUS), through the Office of the National Director of International Linkages, strongly condemns the unjust detention of peaceful protesters who were lawfully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. This act represents an alarming disregard for the rights and freedoms guaranteed to every citizen, including university students and young people who seek to actively participate in shaping their nation.
The detention of these individuals without cause is both unconstitutional and a gross violation of their human rights. We remind the Federal Government (FG) of its duty to uphold democratic values and protect citizens’ rights to peacefully express dissent. Actions that seek to silence legitimate voices only serve to undermine democracy and the principles upon which our nation is built.
NAUS hereby issues a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to ensure the unconditional release of all detained protesters. Should this demand not be met within the stipulated period, we will be compelled to escalate our actions, employing all legal avenues and galvanizing both local and international advocacy to address this injustice.
We stand in solidarity with the detained protesters and emphasize that our nation’s youth, especially university students, will not be deterred in the pursuit of justice, peace, and democracy.
