The Nigeria Police Command in Ebonyi has reported the arrest of at least 177 suspected criminals for various offenses throughout October 2024. Among these, four individuals are alleged to be involved in human organ harvesting and ritual killings.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Joshua Ukandu shared the details at a press conference in Abakaliki on Friday. He indicated that the total arrested includes 162 males and 15 females.
“Out of the 177 suspects, 92 have been charged in court, while the others will be arraigned once investigations are complete,” Ukandu stated.
He provided an update on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, CP Anthonia Uche-Anya, emphasizing the command’s ongoing efforts to combat crime and create a safe environment for socio-economic growth. “We have implemented strategic measures, including enhanced stakeholder engagement, to minimize crime,” he added.
During the month, the command saw a reduction in violent crime incidents while continuing to ensure safety across the state.
Regarding the organ harvesting allegations, Ukandu recounted that on October 11, a report was made by Mrs. Blessing Chikezie about her husband, Mr. Idenyi Chikezie, who went missing after a trip to Lagos on September 9.
Following an investigation by the Anti-kidnapping Unit, Innocent Elebe and Eze Elechi were arrested, leading to further arrests of Obinna Nwanguru and Oda Peter. They confessed to killing Idenyi Chikezie, Chibu Odii, and Eze Fabian on different occasions, intending to use their organs for a treatment related to Down syndrome.
The police have recovered the bodies of Idenyi Chikezie and Chibu Odii, and efforts are underway to locate the remains of the third victim. Additional arrests were made for offenses including kidnapping, murder, robbery, and unlawful possession of firearms.
