The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert concerning the illegal sale and distribution of an unregistered brand of condoms in Nigeria known as “Foula Condoms.” Discovered in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State, these condoms are being sold without the required NAFDAC registration, posing a significant risk to public health.
NAFDAC’s Public Alert No. 039/2024 explains that Foula Condoms, packaged in sets of three, lack proper labeling in English, which violates NAFDAC’s regulations. As the product has not undergone standard safety testing and certification, its quality and efficacy remain unverified, increasing the risk of product failure. According to NAFDAC, using such unregistered condoms could lead to issues like unintended pregnancies and a higher risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections if the condoms break or leak.
The agency advises consumers and healthcare providers to avoid purchasing or using unverified condoms and urges anyone who encounters Foula Condoms to report them. NAFDAC’s office can be contacted through their toll-free line at 0800-162-3322 or via email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
This alert highlights the importance of only using registered products to ensure health and safety, especially when it comes to medical devices.
