The Ogun State Government has closed Obada Grammar School in Obada, Idi-Emi, following the death of a Senior Secondary 2 student, Monday Arijo. This action comes after the arrest and suspension of a teacher accused of causing the student’s death through corporal punishment.
The school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been suspended after being issued a query for permitting corporal punishment, which is against state regulations.
In a statement from Mr. Lekan Adeniran, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, it was announced that the governor ordered the school’s closure and the establishment of a panel to investigate the incident. The governor pledged that those found responsible would face legal consequences.
Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology visited the family of the deceased to express condolences and gather firsthand accounts for a comprehensive investigation. The delegation included key officials who reiterated the government’s commitment to student safety and support for the grieving family.
The local police chief, DPO Idi-Emi, assured the family that a thorough inquiry would be conducted to ensure justice. Additionally, a condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000 were presented to the family as a gesture of sympathy during this difficult time. The family expressed their sorrow and shock at the tragic loss.
