The Federal Government plans to set up a control centre to tackle irregular migration, as announced by the Minister. This initiative aims to enhance migration management and address related challenges.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the federal government will set up a Command and Control Centre to monitor and manage irregular migration into the country.
He revealed this information during the induction ceremony for operational officers at the Command and Control Centre for Regular Migration in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo stated, “Today, we are focusing on establishing the regular migration command and control centre. In the near future, we’ll introduce a similar facility for irregular migration.”
He assured that the president would soon be inaugurating e-gates at international airports and stated they wouldn’t only focus on these air travel points. Instead, efforts will also be made to ensure pre-profiling for anyone entering through land and marine borders.
In his view, it is a plan that allows no room for error or guesswork; one must remain mentally alert and prepared to make sacrifices for the nation.
He emphasized that security needs to be 100 percent accurate rather than 99.9 percent, arguing that even a 0.1 percent margin of error can undermine the remaining accuracy. He also highlighted their commitment to providing uninterrupted power supply around the clock because they cannot afford any downtime.
The Minister explained that thanks to the infrastructure in the command and control centre, no one should be able to enter Nigeria without being pre-profiled. The government has equipped officers with tools for objective screening, eliminating subjective assessments.
Comptroller General Kemi Nandap of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) stated that 123 officers and personnel, who successfully completed intensive foundational training, were chosen to work at the center.
